Quarter 1
REFLECTION ON THE QUARTER 1 THEME:
The theme of quarter 1 was the American Dream. The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. I agree with the major argument in the Vanity Fair article, people should work hard for the American Dream but not so much that the parents don't even see their children. Like in the Great Gatsby, James Gatsby was nothing at first and became very successful but at the end he was not content because he couldn't satisfy Daisy .

Columnist Rhetorical Analysis Reflection :
For Quarter 1 my columnist was Jay Mathews. Jay Mathews used a lot of pathos when he writes his article. An example of that would be when Mathew said " That’s a mouthful." But without it, our teachers will probably struggle for improvement and many of our children will remain poor readers" (Education reform movement’s co-founder denounces its focus on teacher quality), this is just one of the example of when he used pathos but he uses a lot of pathos and I think it's so he can grab his audience attention. Mathew also uses logos when he said "About 11 percent of U.S. students used dual enrollment in the most recent data." he also used many more logos and I believe he used logos to make his implication more logical and reasonable.

Quarter 1 Novel, The Great Gatsby:
In " The Great Gatsby " one example of how the author express this idea about Americans and the American Dream is when Gatsby a men who grew up with nothing but became something his and successful, but something was still missing ( Daisy ) even though he was living the American Dream. In " The Declaration of Independence " one example of how the author express this idea about Americans and the American Dream was when Jefferson said "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" and that's what the American Dream is all about happiness. Stanton used the same example as Jefferson for " The Declaration Of Sentiments and Resolutions". I agree with Fitzgerald perspective. I think money, family, and love will bring people true satisfaction not just money.

Favorite Quarter 1 40- minute Timed Write:
The Synthesis essay was my favorite because in my opinion it was the easiest. I also like how the Synthesis essay had all the evidence for us so all we had to do was read and find the one that support what you wanted. I also just found the prompt very interesting for this essay and I like it. This essay just seem like it works better than the other ones when you only have 40 minutes to write one

Quarter 1 Reflection:
I learned more about logos, ethos, pathos. I also saw many ways to get 9 on the essay on AP test, so i kind of got a better understanding of what a 9 essay looks like. The most meaning full unit would have to be the American Dream. I gain the most from the Jefferson-Stanton Comparison Rhetorical Analysis Essay. I wish we had skipped the socratic seminar. I am looking forward to improving my essay skills. My quarter 2 learning goals would have to be to be able towrite a good argument essay.

Quarter 2
Their eyes were watching God:
One rhetorical device Hurston used was metaphor. She use metaphor when she was comparing men and women and she compared women to mule, because some man treat woman like animal. She also compared the black man to mule because they were working like animals. Also Matt Bonner's mule was another example of image because the mule was abused and she felt sympathy for it.
Second metaphor Hurston used was the blossoming pear tree. Janie was amazed by the tree. She sees the meaning of love when she sees the married bees. The pear tree is a representation of womanhood. She just wanted that true faithful love.
The theme of their eyes were watching god was gender. How woman get treated unfairly compared to man, and most of the time the man treat their woman unfairly.

Q2 COLUMNIST PRECIS PAPER:
My columnist, Stephen Burd uses a lot of pathos and logos in his paper. He uses a lot of number, for example,"As a result of being pressured into do so by ITT, approximately 8,600 consumers entered into loans they could not afford, did not want, did not understand, or didn’t even know they had,” the CFPB’s lawsuit states." He used reasoning by using this evidence. Same thing when it comes to him using pathos.
He used these two devices to advance his overall meaning because by using pathos he can get his audience to feel emotion. By using logos he can get the audience reasoning and logical side. And, this just makes his work more reliable.

Q2 SYNTHESIS PAPER FINAL DRAFT:
Reflection
My essay does respond to the prompt. I said culture defines a person’s identity. My essay did use the required number and diversity of sources. I did not feel comfortable using visual source because it was hard to cite. Sadly I did not go above and beyond the source requirements.
In the process of researching I learned how to use MLA and how to find reliable sources. I am sure that my source are reliable because i reviewed the powerpoint. I learned that MLA style is not as hard as I thought it would be. I would be more comfortable with the in-text-citations, formatting, and works cited pages in my next paper if it was MLA. I learned that the title should not be bold or anything.
The easiest thing about writing the synthesis paper for me was finding the sources. My evidence made me feel more confident. The work citing page was very challenging for me. My rebuttal made me feel like I was not quite sure how to proceed. I was ok, not confident that I organized my essay into a logical coherent essay. The reason for that is because I did my outline late so then it made me have less time to actually work on my essay. My counterargument was the easiest for me because it was easy to understand why others would think race identifies a person. The hardest was the rebuttal because I could not decide what evidence to use.

QUARTER 2 REFLECTION :
In Quarter 2 I learned that culture identifies a person and not race. The most meaningful lesson we did this unit was the " Being black and middle class" discussion. I gain the most from reading the novel " Their Eyes Were Watching God." I wish we skipped all those socratic seminar.
In Quarter 3 I look forward to the book we're reading this Quarter. I love the fact that we will be learning about moral and ethics. My Quarter 3 goals is to get an A in this class like I did the past two Quarter.
